Restoring Native Plants at Generation Park

Gonzalo and Stacey walk us through Generation Park’s initiatives to restore native pants within Generation Park.

Newly planted native plants surround Grandfather’s lake and will bring natural beauty and attract pollinators to the area.

Native Plants are coming back to Generation Park! The restoration initiatives are driven by visually captivating landscape, aiming to naturalize open spaces and enhancing biodiversity. One of the main sites for this project is located at Grandfather’s Lake. Aiming at surrounding the lake with luscious flowers that will help create a natural and native ecosystem.

Restoring native plant life to the area has many things going for it, from the looks to their physical purpose. Native plants have evolved to withstand certain elements that are unique to the Houston region. From extreme drought conditions to the fury of hurricanes, native plants have grown to take on the elements. With roots that delve deep into the earth, often reaching up to fifteen feet, these native species are adept at sourcing water during droughts while contributing significantly to soil stability.

The process to bring in native plants is still in the early stages, which will take about 3-4 years of plant growth to be fully seen. Our initiative spans across various areas, including expansive stormwater basins, the graceful slopes of drainage canals, picturesque landscape easements, and other thoughtfully curated park spaces. This is just the beginning of the native plant life restoration for Generation Park.
