Maryland-based United Therapeutics Corp. (Nasdaq: UTHR) has opened its 77,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Generation Park, joining a growing cluster of life sciences companies at McCord Development’s 4,300-acre campus in northeast Houston. The Dr. Bartley P. Griffith and Dr. Robert A. Montgomery Xenograft Production Facility is purpose-built to manufacture kidneys and hearts for the company’s rapidly advancing organ manufacturing program.
“Every day, people with end-stage organ disease die waiting for an organ that never comes,” said Martine Rothblatt, chairperson and CEO of United Therapeutics in a news release. “With our third xenograft production facility now open and clinical trials underway, United Therapeutics is moving closer to its goal of providing transplantable organs to the people who need them.”
Houston joins the company’s existing sites in Christiansburg, Virginia, which opened in 2024 to support ongoing clinical trials, and Stewartville, Minnesota, which opened in August. The Stewartville and Houston locations are designed to help United Therapeutics scale commercial production of its manufactured organs following regulatory approval.
The facility honors two pioneers in transplantation. Griffith conducted the world’s first transplants of United Therapeutics’ manufactured hearts in 2022 and 2023, and Montgomery performed the first kidney transplant in the company’s EXPAND clinical trial in 2025, for a patient with end-stage renal disease.
United Therapeutics’ arrival adds to a wave of life sciences investment at Generation Park, where pharmaceutical leaders Lilly and Bristol Myers Squibb have announced a combined $8.8 billion in manufacturing projects. Together, these companies mark a significant step in McCord Development’s vision to establish Generation Park as a hub for life sciences innovation, bringing advanced biomanufacturing, highly specialized jobs and groundbreaking medical research to the region.
