Is Houston at the cusp of a life science boom?

Generation Park participated in Bisnow’s Houston Life Science Conference to discuss the rise of biotech and biomanufacturing in the greater Houston area. Our own Shawn Cloonan, McCord Development’s Life Science Lead and General Counsel, participated on behalf of Generation Park on a panel alongside Monique Knighten of Portal Innovations, Scott Nudelman of Vitrian, Jim Levin of Perkins & Will, Danielle McGuire of SOM, and Kurt Lindorfer of PARADIGM Structural Engineers.

A variety of topics were covered, including the current state of the readily available workforce, the future of workforce training, community diversity, resilient infrastructure, and strategic locales to name a few.

Here are some takeaways

Houston, we DON’T have a problem

In the dynamic landscape of manufacturing, Houston, has emerged as a leader for industries seeking optimal locations for their cutting-edge manufacturing facilities. In the US, 10,000 new manufacturing jobs were created last year, of those, 6,000 were in Houston. More and more manufacturing opportunities are coming to Houston and Generation Park is strategically located to their benefit.

A Global Hub for Medical Innovation and Research

Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center (TMC), the largest medical complex in the world. With over 50 institutions, including hospitals, research facilities, and medical schools, the TMC is a hub for innovation and medical advancements. It conducts a significant portion of clinical trials in the United States, with approximately 20% of all clinical trials taking place within its facilities. With close proximity to the TMC, this makes Generation Park and the Lake Houston Area an optimal site for biomanufacturing. With groundbreaking for the Center for Biotechnology located at San Jacinto College – Generation Park, and construction underway, this positions Generation Park as the perfect spot for Houston’s growth in the life science sector.

Houston’s communities are ideal for growth in biomanufacturing

Many factors go into site selection, reliable infrastructure, supply chain logistics, and proximity to talent, just to name a few. At the heart of successful site selection lies the understanding that it’s about people, as emphasized in the conference discussions. Generation Park and the Lake Houston community provide an idyllic environment for biomanufacturing while also catering to the live, work, play philosophy. The integration of lifestyle elements underscores the long-term sustainability of the region—a departure from retrofitted sites discussed in previous projects, acknowledging that such approaches may not be sustainable.

Strategic Logistics Hub

Generation Park stands as a logistics powerhouse being in close proximity to key logistical hubs. With accessibility to the Port of Houston (20 minutes) and to Bush Intercontinental Airport (10 minutes), this enhances the transportation capabilities for bio-manufacturing operations. Generation Park’s strategic location facilitates the efficient movement of raw materials and finished products, ensuring a streamlined supply chain for businesses operating in the area.
